What is Fertility Reflexology?
Fertility Reflexology is a specialist type of Reflexology specifically aimed at helping couples who have been diagnosed with unexplained infertility and for women who have been told they have hormone imbalances that are affecting their fertility.
Of all couples who undergo tests to determine the cause of their infertility, approximately 25% will be told it’s unexplained. This can be just as difficult to come to terms with as it is for those given a reason for their infertility. The medical world offers no answers and often stress and anxiety levels can soar. Frequently the only course of action is to try IVF which can be stressful, invasive and increasingly expensive.
Women diagnosed with hormone imbalances often find themselves in the same situation of facing IVF cycles or sometimes even being told there is no course of action available.
In these situations it can be worth taking a period of reflection before embarking on IVF. Fertility Reflexology is aimed at balancing the body and hormones as much as is possible over a period of a few months.
Having said all the above, anyone who’s trying to conceive or wishing to get their body in peak condition before conceiving will benefit from some reflexology. You can still receive the hormone balancing aspect of the work and all the benefits that reflexology brings but over a less intense schedule than the one set out below.
What can Fertility Reflexology do for you?
For those who’ve been offered IVF but have reservations about the process, it’s worth considering a course of Fertility Reflexology first. This will work on the body on two levels:
1 – to work specifically over key areas including the hormone reflexes to rebalance the body, and
2 – to calm the body’s central nervous system. This will reduce the associated stress and anxiety that is almost certainly present and potentially making a sub fertile situation even worse.
However, balancing a body takes time and for women I advise having 8 to 10 sessions over a few months.
When there has been a diagnosis of unexplained fertility it should not be assumed that it is only down to the woman and it is always recommended that both partners have reflexology. For men, there is a little less going on in the body and it is likely that balance can be achieved a bit quicker so I advise slightly fewer sessions – 6 to 8 over the same timeframe.
Clearly this number of sessions involves a financial commitment, albeit significantly less than a self-funded IVF cycle. Every couple’s circumstances are different and only you can make the call. However I feel it would be unethical for me not to include this information within these pages so that you can make an informed choice. If you are keen to progress, I can reassure you that I have undertaken specialist training and have relevant experience in this field.
What can you expect during a Fertility Reflexology session?
A Fertility Reflexology session is carried out in the same way as a normal reflexology session i.e. you sit back in a reclining chair while the reflex points of the feet are worked.
What makes these sessions different is that:
a) the focus of the session will be on the reflex points of the endocine system (the system of the body that is responsible for our hormone levels), and
b) the work is carried out in a particular sequence found to be the most beneficial way to bring about balance.
The sessions all include a lot of work to aid relaxation and stress reducing techniques to calm the central nervous system.
Regular therapy will always bring the best results but this is particularly true when trying to balance the body’s hormone system and keep it balanced. It is a big commitment but one that an increasing number of couples are reported to be prepared to try.
